A Coastal Retreat: From Forgotten Space to Dreamy Escape
Concept design · Airbnb · Seaside town, Kent
Small spaces are the hardest to get right.
There is no room for error, no corridor to absorb a bad decision, no extra square metre to compensate for poor planning. Every choice is visible. Every proportion matters. And yet when a small space is designed with genuine intelligence, it doesn't feel small at all — it feels considered.
This coastal retreat started as a forgotten corner — a compact space in a sunny seaside town with more potential than its previous life had allowed it. The brief was an Airbnb. But the ambition was something a guest would remember.
The design is built around light, simplicity, and the particular pleasure of being somewhere that feels effortlessly calm. Natural light was treated as the primary material. Every element was chosen to make the space feel open without pretending to be something it isn't. The result is intimate without being cramped, restful without being empty.
A retreat that does exactly what a retreat should — removes the friction of daily life and replaces it with nothing more complicated than the feeling of being exactly where you should be.
